Chukars’ Goris smacks walk-off 2-run homer

Just when it looked like the Idaho Falls Chukars were going to go to extra innings, Diego Goris stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth with two outs.

The second baseman cranked a two-run homer that soared over the left field wall to score Adrian Martinez, tossed his batting helmet after rounding third base and sprinted home, where he was swarmed by his maroon-clad teammates.

The homer sealed the 5-3 win over the Billings Mustangs before 3,135 in attendance at Melaleuca Field, capping a Chukars’ rally that began in the seventh inning. The Chukars fell quickly into a 3-0 hole in the third inning.

The victory also snapped a three-game losing streak and avenged three previous losses to the Mustangs (16-7) within the past week.

“It was a great win against a great team, especially coming from behind,” Chukars manager Omar Ramirez said. “We haven’t had many of those this year. They’re (Billings) probably the best team all around.”

The Mustangs played like the top team in the Pioneer League North Division early on, breaking open a pitcher’s duel with runs by

Julio Morillo, Beau Amarel and Jesse Winker to jump ahead 3-0 in the third inning. Idaho Falls (12-11) recorded no hits after that until the seventh inning, when runs by Elier

Hernandez, Nick DelGuidice and Jared Schlehuber tied the game at 3-3.

Fernando Cruz, who improved his record to 4-3 on the mound with the win, saw the comeback unfolding.

“That was glorious,” Cruz said. “We were fighting and fighting and we got the win.”

Ramirez said he knew as soon as Goris hit into the wind, that ball was gone. Goris knew it, too, and in the excitement, he had to toss his helmet on the way to home plate.

“It was something I can’t explain,” Goris said through Cruz. “It was the first time that happened in my life.”
