Chukars walk off winners after 15 innings

What began as a pitcher’s duel ended as a marathon of a game.

The Idaho Falls Chukars’ return to Melaleuca Field for a six-game homestand surpassed the four-and-a-half hour mark Monday in a 6-5 win over the Ogden Raptors in  a 15 innings before 2,256 fans. The contest  was tied at 5-5 for two hours.

Adrian Martinez’s walkoff walk in the bottom of the 15th inning scored Adalberto Mondesi for the Chukars’ win.

Idaho Falls (5-4 second half) had the opportunity to end the game early and seal a win. In the top of the ninth with two outs and a man on third, Raptors designated hitter Eric Smith cranked a single to deep right field. Chukars right fielder Elier Hernandez lifted up his glove for the would-be third out to end the frame and the game with a 5-4 Idaho Falls win, but was unable to complete the catch. It was the Chukars’ second error of the game and it allowed Raptors center fielder to score and tie the game at 5-5.

Hernandez, Nick Cuckovich and Rainier Bello went down in consecutive at-bats in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.

For the first three innings, Chukars starting pitcher Ali Williams and Raptors starting pitcher Carlos Frias allowed just two hits and one walk each. The Raptors’ bats came alive in the top of the third when Bladimir Smith scored on a wild pitch and Smith hit a sacrifice fly to deep left field to score Delvis Morales.

Bello put Idaho Falls on the board off a single to deep left by Nick DelGuidice in the bottom of the fourth. Corey Seager and Travis Lane scored a run each for the Raptors and Chukars, respectively, in the fifth inning to put the game at 3-2 in favor of Ogden.

Seager scored off a double by Jose Capellan to give Ogden its biggest lead of 4-2 at the top of the sixth.

The Chukars rallied in the bottom of the seventh with five consecutive hits by Ethan Chapman, Mondesi, Hernandez, Cuckovich and Bello. In a matter of minutes, Hernandez cranked a single that allowed Chapman to slide in to home, Cuckovich was tagged out at home in the same play and Bello scored off a wild pitch by Raptors pitcher Gregg Downing to give Idaho Falls its first lead at 5-4.

The Chukars host the Raptors (4-5) again tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
